20211227 Diagnosis: Autism - The Daily Summation

Have the number of "cases of" Autism exploded over the course of time, or has the recognition and diagnosis of it just become better?

Looking at cases of Level 2, and Level 3 Autism, I would guess the numbers have been the same (particularly for Severe) Autism for a VERY LONG TIME.

The seeming explosion of Level 1 (Mild) Autism is, I believe, the result of better RECOGNITION (primarily), and better diagnosis (secondarily, in my view) of that condition.

I'll leave the discussion of the numbers, to folks having done far more work on things than I have.

To be fair, I reckon it's pretty likely that many parents and guardians felt their child would be "pegged with" a condition with a certain level of stigma attached.

As such, I think many probably fought against such a diagnosis.

The fact that it's not looked at as much in that way these days, is a good thing.

One more thought (of course, there's more in the video). Diagnosis of Autism ALMOST CERTAINLY is a generally good thing.

Why?

Because it helps folks whose brains work differently, by causing those teaching and otherwise dealing with them, to develop better strategies doing so.

The subject of "Diagnosis: Autism" is what I chose for today's edition of The Daily Summation from Kurt's Religion and Politics.

It's something that's near and dear to me, and something I see people advancing ideas on, which I feel the need and desire to counter.

When I'm able to complete the companion article on the Kurt's Religion and Politics blog, I'll post a link to it here.
