Sometimes the most familiar-sounding names are used to conceal deception in supplements. Caffeine powder, for example, may not sound any scarier than your typical morning coffee. However, when combined with other stimulants, this supplement ingredient, which is commonly used in weight loss and athletic performance enhancing products, can cause seizures, heart arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, and even death.
For the same reason, if you saw "green tea extract powder" on a supplement bottle, you might be inclined to believe it. After all, couldn't we all benefit from a little more green tea in our diets? In reality, "green tea extract powder," or camellia sinensis, which is commonly used in weight loss products, can cause poor iron absorption, high blood pressure, liver damage, decreased efficacy of certain prescription medications, and even death.
