The family Sciuridae is a family of mammals that includes small or medium sized rodents. This family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including American marmots), flying squirrels, prairie dogs, and other rodents. Squirrels are native to the Americas, Eurasia and Africa, and were introduced to Australia by humans.[1] The earliest known fossil squirrels date from the Eocene, and of the other living rodent families, the squirrel is the closest relative to the mountain beaver and the chipmunk.
