The 1970s Cooling Scare Was Real

345

In the 1970s, journalists, activists and scientists worried that human activity, especially burning fossil fuels, would disrupt the climate, causing bad weather, crop failure and a collapse of civilization due to cooling. Modern alarmists claim it was a fringe view and serious people knew all along that that human activity, especially burning fossil fuels, would disrupt the climate, causing bad weather, crop failure and a collapse of civilization due to warming. But as Dr. John Robson explains in this Climate Discussion Nexus "Crystal Ball" video, it was taken very seriously at the time, only to be dropped down the memory hole along with the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age when it became an inconvenient truth.

  • Another great video thank you! I'm afraid your wisdom will be lost on warming enthusiasts. all we are asking is that they recognize that the science is not settled and this room for discussion and debate that would lead to better public policy.

  • If I was one of the global warming enthusiasts I would really hate your channel. You are unnecessarily confusing people with facts. But since I am not one of the global warming enthusiasts I'm not offended by facts, keep up the good work I appreciate it.

  • I'm looking forward to Alex Epstien's new book. Alex is one of the clear thinkers when it comes to climate change. Perhaps have him as a guest soon?

  • I love this channel and enjoy your articles! My wife just rolls her eyes…she struggles with facts sometimes 😂

  • I remember the Ice Age Scare vividly. I was a young adult and had ambitions to become a scientist. (I ended up an engineer...), but I read all kinds of science articles and the consensus was imminent Ice Age. And there was more. MannMade pollution and particulate in the atmosphere would destroy agriculture and famine was inevitable. Google it. There was book after book on this general theme. "Famine 1975 - Who Will Survive". It goes on and on. It is amazing to me that people now deny the cooling panic ever happened. It did. I was there.

  • I noticed, a long time ago, that every time I heard any scary story in the media about any scientific issue they would always say that it requires further study. Which means they need more money to study the problem. With climate change, I am confused as to why they have not got it all figured out yet considering all the studies and money that has been spent on researching it.
