Skepticism (David Hume)

483

Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas. Today they will be looking into Skepticism, this is the idea that we can and should doubt all our knowledge.

All beliefs and knowledge about the world should be questioned and doubted, and in fact we should all approach the word as having no absolute certain knowledge of it.

Whilst this is a radical Philosophy George will look into the works of David Hume who supported this theory, and will focus on the Problem of Induction as a basis for Skeptic thought. John will then look into the criticisms of Skepticism and the two will see if this is a valid Philosophy to hold.

  • In today's world, how can you not be a Skeptic? Nothing is as it seems.

  • I thought being a skeptic was not to be close minded and or blind to the fact of missing data that didn’t align with ones intellect, to continue to question if something was not explained for, like science does looking for data for only the one truth! I disagree with Philosophy Vibe on this one! 🐑

  • Very nice and informative video, we can’t live in state of constant doubts and skepticism…. I really enjoyed your discussion and it’s brainstorming and fruit for thoughts. Thank you

  • Cool voices. And cool videos so far (3). We cannot inductively assume that all further videos will also be cool. But it's a possibility.

  • Skeptic, I understand, means someone who ponders or thinks about something. I came to my understanding from the Greek word σκέψη, which means thought. I guess David Hume's skepticism is something I'll have to think about.

  • They didn't take any time to dig into 'deductive reasoning'. If it is the process or product of abstract reasoning it seems to me to be essentially effete and still open to doubt as the 'facts' can change and prove us wrong in our original deductions. 2+2=4 Except if you go to buy something and a tax is imposed. Now you need more than 4 to buy what cost 4. If you invest 2+2 wisely you get more than 4 hopefully. Deductive reason seems like silly school room talk to me.
