FYI The Sixth Amendment guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and evidence against you.

Meet Massachusetts new U.S. Federal Attorney General Rachel Rollins

Nov 2021: At a recent virtual talk organized by the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston, Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins emphasized the need to fight for equality and equity and confront the underlying causes of crime while centering communities that are “often forgotten, neglected, and ignored” in terms of public safety protection.

DA Rollins... assessment of the way forward in criminal justice reform.”…Underlining the need for criminal justice reform to rectify challenges faced by marginalized communities, DA Rollins also stressed the need to connect reforms to mental health access and treatment. She described her desire to build a criminal legal system that upholds justice and accountability rather than one that “criminalizes poverty, housing insecurity, substance abuse, and mental illness” in which a person’s immigration status or race predicts their likelihood of incarceration.

She said that the criminal legal system has failed “generations of people” and ensured the over-policing and over-prosecution of communities of color.

DA Rollins advocated for using data-informed decisions to address wealth and race-based inequalities.
