How did the World Health Organization (WHO) decide on the name for the new virus variant? The WHO has been using the Greek alphabet to name the variants. After the last variant, the next Greek letter would have been “Nu” or “Xi,” but these two names posed a problem for the WHO. Wall Street Journal wrote, “The WHO said it had skipped them because Nu was too easily confused with “new,” while Xi is a common surname.” It’s also the name of China’s authoritarian ruler, Xi Jinping.
