My first guest was Tiarnan Lynch. Tiarnan lived in Hong Kong during the infamous 2019/2020 protests and witnessed the subsequent clashes between protestors and Chinese authorites from the ground
In the first half of the episode Tiarnan and I discussed what it was like growing up in Japan and Hong Kong and the cultural differences between the two and in the second half he told us what it was like seeing the rise, peak and fall of the protests as well as the escalation of force from the Chinese authorities.
Tiarnan also told me some surprising things about covid in Hong Kong including how the pandemic was used to further clamp down on the protestors.
