Architect Charles Baillairge was the winner of an international competition held in 1894 to design a new church for a rapidly expanding Montreal. The winning design is a magnificent version of the Neo-Gothic style, with similarities to English medieval cathedrals and French religious architecture. The portrait of Christ by American artist Lancelot Speed (1860-1929) that dominates the east wall, and its stained glass windows are unique features of this miniature cathedral, which is in both the city's and the province's registries of historic sites.
