Champion 3400-Watt Dual Fuel Generator - Power Safety Shutoff Prep

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E: our local utility) announced that they were shutting off the power because high winds and dry conditions might cause their equipment to fail resulting in a fire. It's happened before.

Spoiler: the Shutoff was cancelled, but we learned a few things.

We bought a Champion 3400-Watt Generator last year after a couple of power shutoffs due to fire danger and this would be our first chance to use it during an actual shutoff. We sized the generator to run the refrigerator/freezer and one other appliance like the microwave. It was a much more affordable option versus buying a whole house generator.

This time PG&E called off the shutoff in our area (other areas did lose power in CA), but we learned a few things for the next one during this real-world preparation .

After this experience, I just bought a 50 foot 20 amp extension cord to go with the 25 foot one that wasn't quite long enough to reach the fridge without hanging in the air:

I'll use the 25 foot 20 amp extension cord to run the microwave. Overkill, but I like having dedicated extension cords for this purpose.
