The Tewksbury Almshouse was authorized by an act of the Massachusetts General Court in 1852 and opened in May 1854, accepting what was then known as the “pauper insane.”- the poor and abandoned. It was the state’s first facility to accept the chronically insane.
Many experimental procedures were performed on the residents. Across the street there is a forest filled with over 10,000 unmarked graves. How did these people die and why are there no records of even the names of the victims? Are we repeating history by performing experiments on the people today?
