The Double Paradiddle .. working it out on the pad before taking it to the drum kit. Searching for more applications for this rudiment .RLRLRR LRLRLL . Growing as a drummer and Audio Engineer I find myself relating more to being an artist then a drummer or musician. I mean the drums are my main instrument of expression .
I created this video a few years ago and realized I was already on the path of becoming an artist and not just a drummer. As drummers we need to continually work, study with a good instructor to stay focused and move ahead. These days I look at the rudiments as static forms that you should be calling on as needed to complete a phrase or start a musical part and so on. Have you ever watched a painter holding what looks like a round cylinder that has all the colors of the palette he or she will need to complete the painting, (think Picaso).
The painter dip the brush or most times different brushes in water and then will continue to mix certain colors to achieve the effect that they are looking for balancing the colors and light together. If the painter only use one color at a time the end result would be like a paint by numbers or coloring book type of a finished painting. Lifeless, ordinary without any movement or impression.

The 40 Drum rudiments are no different then the painters pallet they exist to be mixed, broken up, bastardized, raped and used anyway possible because your end result is what is most important and the rudiments would not want it any other way.
