Vox Clamantis in Deserto

At a moment when he could have been elevated in the eyes of the people, St. John the Baptist further demonstrates humility by simply describing himself as a voice. I’m just a voice…no more… a vox clamantis…a voice of one crying in the wilderness…prepare the way of the Lord. St. John the Baptist was just a voice, but not the Word Itself. He was just a horn the blows, but not the music itself. As the great Church Father, St. Augustine, stated: John was the voice, but the Lord is the Word that existed since the beginning of all things. John was a passing voice; Christ is the Eternal Word, from the beginning. A voice simply carries the Word to the mind of the listener, but then it fades away. The voice served its purpose as a channel of truth, but then it is no longer heard in the ear but the Living Word remains in the soul of the receiver. The Word must increase, but the voice must decrease. The voice of the opening act goes off stage while the main act of the Word takes the stage.
