The 2S3M Akatsiya is an early variant of the 2S3 self-propelled gun, also designated CO-152. The 2S3 was developed in 1967 and entered service in 1971. The M variant had a variety of changes, including a mechanized drum-type stowage for 12 rounds of ammunition, reduced armor, a repositioned antenna, and increased ammunition storage. The vehicle is capable of being air transported in a Russian An-22. As of 2007, the Russian military still had more than 1400 of the various models of this vehicle in active service with more than 1600 in storage. The vehicle and its variants served in the Soviet-Afghan War, the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, the Tajikistan Civil War, the First and Second Chechen Wars, the South Ossetia War, the Libyan and Syrian Civil Wars and the War in Donbass. 2S3s remain in service in 17 countries.

The 2S3M Akatsiya is 8.4 meters long in total, 3.25 meters wide, 3 meters tall and weighs in at a maximum of 28 metric tons. The V-59 12-cylinder 4-stroke water-cooled diesel produces 520 horsepower for a maxmimum speed of 63 km/hour. The Akatsiya mounts a 152.4mm D-22 Howitzer and carries 46 rounds of ammunition (including HE, HE-Frag, HEAT-FS, AP-T, OF-38 Krasnopol laser-guided rocket assisted projectiles, illumination, smoke and even nuclear projectiles (up to 2 kilotons). It is also equipped with a 7.62mm machine gun mounted to the commander's cupola. In addition, a self-entrenching blade is equipped, allowing the vehicle to prepare a trench in... 20-40 minutes. Up to 6 men crew the vehicle, including a driver, gunner, loader, commander, and two ammunition bearers who get the unenviable job of standing behind the vehicle and stuffing rounds from hull storage into the hatches on the rear of the turret.

In War Thunder, the 2S3M Akatsiya will be joining the Russian tank destroyer line at rank IV.
