A person was injured after the top of an outdoor dining tent blew free in high winds.

The high winds blew off part of the roof of the tent attached to The Odeon restaurant in Manhattan, New York, USA on Monday night (6/12).

Video from the scene shows chaos as at least eight firefighters broke down the structure and huge trucks blocked the road.

Susan Lee, 43, describes hearing a loud bang like "scaffolding collapsed" from her home near West Broadway, Tribeca.

The fundraising consultant said: "Within minutes, I heard emergency vehicles and saw several coming down my street and West Broadway.

"I hope no one was hurt.

"I could have been outside walking to dinner when this happened.

"I was actually going to grab a bite at the restaurant across the street but decided not to go because a storm was rolling in."

Susan saw two ambulances and firemen removing collapsed scaffolding when she went out to investigate.

She said: "People were still eating at the outdoor dining area on the other side of the collapsed shed.

"It’s time to remove these sheds and come up with a holistic approach on how to make them safe if they are to go up again.

"Public safety must be the city’s number one priority, not business or private interests.

"There are health and safety concerns with these unregulated sheds."

The New York City Fire Department have confirmed the incident took place just before 9pm and that one person was injured and treated at the scene.

They were originally called to the scene with reports the structure had collapsed, but found that only the top covering had blown off.

The video was taken on December 6.
