The game begins with Tommy's jump start into the realm of organized crime. While Tommy takes a break from driving his cab around, gangsters are racing across the city shooting each other up. Two of them, Sam and Paulie, are caught and shot as their car is wrecked, they come running around the corner into Tommy and "persuade" him to offer his services as a taxi driver to escape the car in pursuit.
