Imposter Syndrome on the Dance Floor

How to feel good about my dancing?

A competitive dancer feels like they are limiting/holding back their partner’s full potential. When they first met, she was the beginner and he was more experienced, since then she has vastly improved her skillset, to the point where they are now winning competitions – but she still feel like shes holding back her partner. This person feels like a fraud and they are afraid people are speaking negatively behind their back. It has gotten to the point where they are having panic attacks during competitions.

many partnerships start out with an experienced partner and a newbie partner. Understand that you have to start somewhere,

Fuck everybody’s opinions. In competitive dancesport everybody has them and everybody is jealous in a way and wants to be better than you. So the only opinion that matters is yours, your dance partners and your coaches.

Regardless of what people say - The one thing to keep in mind is that you did put in the effort. You did learn the routines, styling and technique. Regardless of what others say, or make you think of yourself, you earned the skills that you have. Don't let others take away your achievement!

imposter syndrome is real and It's also quite common in the dancing world that people become extremely anxious about competing;

I would focus first on getting your panic attacks under control so you can effectively demonstrate on the floor the dancing that you work so hard on at practice. I wonder if a therapist or a meditation center or even yoga instructor could help. Our physical reactions are closely tied to our mental state and vice versa, so engaging in a physical act of calming may also help you to focus mentally.

Once you are able to avoid the panic attacks, it may also help to get into each comp with a goal of what you as a partnership want to demonstrate. Afterward, get the video, and watch it WITH YOUR COACH to get an objective opinion on what y'all did well and what areas still need work, then make a plan. If you watch it by yourself, you will get fixated on your own shortcomings and spiral - it won't be helpful.

Couples Competition Dancing - is both incredible and terrible because the partnership is the entity that is judged. I think that over time you will think less and less about you vs. your partner, and more about the two of you versus the other couples on the floor (which is the only thing that matters, competitively).
You can do this! And you will look back later and be proud of all you accomplished and learned through the process
