Thousands flee as Indonesia's Mount Semeru volcano erupts trending topic
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. Authorities said Mount Semeru, a volcano in Indonesia's East Java Province, erupted on Saturday, blasting a cloud of smoke and ash and displacing thousands.
Officials said the eruption, which blanketed towns in ashfall and forced people to flee billowing clouds of ash and debris, killed at least one person and injured 41 others.
According to Indah Amperawati, Deputy Head of Lumajang District, an area adjacent to the volcano, at least 300 people were evacuated following the eruption of Mount Semeru volcano in East Java on Saturday.
He claimed that the majority of the burn victims, as well as a resident who died in the village of Curah Kobokan, were taken to the Penanggal Primarily Health Center.
Mount Merapi in Indonesia erupts, spewing ash clouds.
Authorities have been unable to reach several additional communities owing to mud and fallen trees blocking roads, according to Indah.
Major General TNI Suharyanto, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told a press conference that the military had been asked for troops and equipment.
Budi Santosa, the East Java Province's Head of Disaster Management, stated earlier on Saturday that the volcano's eruption has "badly affected" two sub districts.
The Mount Semeru Volcano Observation Post first reported volcanic ash and a sulfur odor approximately 3 p.m. local time (3 a.m. ET).
It went on to say that hot ash clouds were dropping on Sapitarang, an East Java settlement in the Pronojiwo District.
During an eruption on Saturday, Mount Semeru spewed ash into the air.
Residents in the vicinity were seen scurrying away from massive thick clouds of ash in videos posted by government emergency response personnel.
Locals also posted video of people gathering at a local mosque in Besuk Kobokan when ash and smoke blanketed the streets.
Santosa stated at the press conference that he believes health facilities in the disaster area, such as primary health centers and hospitals, will be able to accommodate victims.
His team is currently attempting to execute evacuations and preparing refugee camps in the area, which would supply displaced individuals with food, masks, blankets, and shelter.
Indonesia is sandwiched between two continental plates on the Ring of Fire, a ring of tectonic and volcanic activity that wraps around the Pacific Ocean's basin.
