Can existing vaccines protect against Omicron?

World governments are racing to assess the threat posed by the new Omicron variant of coronavirus, closing borders and reimposing other COVID restrictions. In South Africa, in the region where the mutations were first detected, a Columbia University disease expert is advising the government that vaccines should still offer strong protection against it.
