The genus of rays of the family Arhynchobatidae of the order of rays. These are cartilaginous fish, leading a benthic life, with large, flattened rhombus-shaped pectoral fins and a protruding snout. The mouth is transverse or arched. On the ventral side of the disc, there are 5 branchial slits, nostrils, and mouth. The thin tail has lateral folds. These rays have 2 reduced dorsal fins and a reduced caudal fin. In most species, the skin is covered with thorns. Deep-sea stingrays inhabit all oceans; they are found at depths over 2900 m. The maximum recorded length is 161 cm. They lay eggs enclosed in a four-pointed horny capsule.
