Is Landscape Fabric Worth It?

Weed control fabric (landscape cloth) combined with mulch is a popular method in landscaping - but you may want to give some consideration to the short-term vs. long-term impacts. The duration of weed control may be shorter than you'd imagine - as weed seeds and decaying organic matter accumulate above the cloth. Over time, the cloth does impact the movement of organic matter and soil life through the profile of the soil, so you may end up with all of the negatives (including an ugly, deteriorating layer emerging from your mulch) with very few of the benefits.
