Overwintering Peppers & Roses: Almost the Same!

Most people wouldn't immediately associate peppers and roses as similar in their overwintering requirements, but think of it this way: they're both perennial flowering shrubs with a long growing season. In containers, they can both be successfully overwintered by pruning them back to a bare framework and held at temperatures where they go nearly dormant. The only major difference is the temperature: rose you can hold in the range of 35F, and can tolerate freezing temperatures. Peppers require a base temperature closer to 50F. Either one can be damaged or killed by long periods below their temperature tolerance, and each one will return quickly to flowering a fruiting the following season once warmer temperatures return.
