November 16, 2021 at the Ankeny, Iowa Public School Board Meeting parents were concerned with the possibility of sexual grooming through library books vividly describing gay sexual encounters and showing cartoon porn of minors engaging in sexual activities. Parents Kimberly Reicks & Emily Peterson brought examples of the literature, and Kimberly provided graphics included in the book Gender Queer, which she found in the library at Ankeny Centennial High School. One parent argued in favor of keeping the books in the library. School Board member at the time, Lori Lovstad also appeared to defend the homoerotic pornography that could be used for sexual grooming when she claimed “Fear is what tries to erase our LGBTQ students by banning books.” Lori continues to claim “Fear tries to erase the experience of our students of color by banning divisive concepts.” One may question why are we trying to divide people, create more racism, and create more conflict with “divisive concepts.” This statement seems to reflect that Lori defends the controversial outlawed “Critical Race Theory” (CRT) training that increases divide and instigates racism by drawing more attention to race. Furthermore, it leads to the question of how much Critical Race Theory training currently exists in the Ankeny School District after the social studies teacher Nicholas Covington gave an extensive speech defending CRT training on November 1st.
