The Black Redstart is 13-14 cm long and weighs 12–20 g. Upperparts dark gray to black, black chest, waist, and tail orange-red. Wings blackish gray. The two feathers in the middle of the tail are dark red. The abdomen and underside of the wing are dark gray. They are found in southern and central Europe, Asia, northwestern Africa, Great Britain, Ireland, Morocco, and the eastern and central parts of China. During the winter it migrates to Western Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
