In 2005, sociologists Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton published a book call Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers. In the book, they come to the conclusion that many to most American teens that identify as Christian actually hold to a watered-down hodgepodge of beliefs that the authors refer to as Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. The conclusion that the authors came to was that American teens are learning this belief system from their parents and churches. So this is not a "teen" message. I will not be standing here telling you how far off our youth are. What we will be doing is examining our worldviews.--young and old alike, married or single, parents or not. As a church that claims the name of Christ, we each need to know our Savior and His Word, and we also need to be aware of the "other Jesuses" and the "different gospels" out there.
So, In our time today, we are going to identify and define Moralistic Therapeutic Deism (MTD for short), We are going to examine its inherent dangers, and finally, we will learn the biblical response and countermeasures for our own spiritual walks.
