The MOST important thing in business, life, and relationships is TRUST. If we trust people, or if other people trust us, then things like credibility and influence come with it.
Think for a moment about a celebrity who you liked, who suddenly got themselves embroiled in a scandal, got shown to be...let's say "less than the moral and upstanding person" everyone thought they were.
In an instant, all credibility and trust is destroyed. So while they still may have their millions of dollars, EVERYONE knows they're a dirtbag. And they'll never be able to work or land cushy sponsorships or endorsements ever again. See, Trust and Credibility are worth much more than money long term.
Or think of a friend or even family member who you once trusted...but then something major happened and they showed their true colours. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Here's this person who you trusted deeply...like, you'd even trust them with your children...
...and suddenly they turn out to be something they're not. We feel cheated, fooled, like the wool had been pulled over our eyes...that they lied to us.
And we will never, ever trust them again in a million years...even if they go build orphanages in third world countries or spend their downtime rescuing kittens from high places.
As far as we're concerned, they can never be trusted ever again. Once lost, trust is nearly impossible to re-establish. Or hasn't this happened between you and a business -- where you bought a product that promised a specific result...and once you got it home it didn't deliver?
This has happened to all of us, right? And how does that make you feel? Let me guess -- the short version is, you'll never, ever buy from that company ever again, right? Your trust was violated, you got taken advantage of, and you're never going to let that happen again, right?
This is why in everything we do in our online business, we have to be honest, ethical, genuine...and ACTUALLY deliver on the promises our marketing, our messaging, and that our products and services are making. I'm floored at how novel an idea this is in business.
The last salesman I bought a vehicle from promised me a full tank of gas and an extra fob. I didn't get either. And what are we talking, less than $100 for him? And HE'S the one who brought them up and promised them.
After a handful of phone calls that never got returned, I vowed never to buy from this guy again. What people don't get...and maybe it's an age or experience thing...is, all you have to do is do what you said you were going to do.
You made a promise...now just do what you said you were going to do. It's that simple. THAT'S how you keep customers. That's how you keep people coming back for more and buying from you again and again.
