Coyotes and wolves are related, but not to one another. The coyote is a New World animal that evolved from the wolf, and the two share a common ancestor.

Wolves and coyotes are both animals that were originally from the New World. Modern-day coyotes evolved from wolves, but are now their species.

Coyotes are smaller than wolves, have shorter hair, pointier snouts, and typically live in more open spaces. Wolves are larger than coyotes with shaggier fur coats which they use to disguise themselves in the snow.
