How do I find a dance partner?

If you're near a college, you can see if they have a social dancing team or club!

make it widely known that you are looking for a practice partner and eventually word of mouth will find you one. For example, if you go to a social and dance with someone good, ask them afterward if they know anyone looking for a practice partner. Better yet, ask the person who runs the social since they are probably have a great network in your geography.

You can obviously never learn how to lead or follow without a partner, and by practicing solo you might accidentally "learn" moves that are impossible with a partner. If you're a follower, you run the risk of becoming too independent (and therefore hurt your following ability).

A similar risk occurs when using videos. Some online instructors are very bad at actually telling what our bodies are doing. If you try to follow videos too much, you might pick up some bad habits because you think you're doing what they do in the video, while actually you're doing something else. It's much more difficult to unlearn a habit than it is to learn the correct one.

So what can you safely do alone? Simply review the steps (what foot goes where and when). Practice posture (but not using videos, using the tips your instructor have you). And for the rest, you really need your partner to practice properly.
