Canadian couple ditch normal life to live on a tiny 40ft boat

A Canadian couple have given up traditional housing to live at sea on a 40 foot sail boat - despite having never sailed before.

In 2019, Taryn Pickard, 32, and her husband Logan, 36, decided to ditch their regular jobs and follow their dream of sailing around the world - and have lived on the water ever since.

The couple originally met 11 years ago, and have always been interested in living an alternative lifestyle.

They began investing in real estate to build up their savings in preparation for a big change - but for years didn't know what that change would be.

After relocating to Ireland from Canada to try their hand at tiny home living, Taryn and Logan quickly realised the move wasn't living up to their expectations.

They still wanted to change their way of life, and on their travels the couple noticed people living on their sail boats, parked up in local marinas.

Although neither had sailed before, the idea of living at sea resonated with them both, and upon arriving home, they purchased their first boat.

Taryn, an ex yoga teacher from Vancouver Island, Canada, said: "We first started dreaming of the boat life when we were in Ireland.

"We noticed that people were doing it a lot over there, and the idea of not being restricted to one location really appealed to us.

"Because of the cold climate in Canada we weren’t aware people were actually doing it, but when we looked on YouTube we found out it was quite popular.

"So, with no past sailing experience we signed up for a five day crash course in our local area, and dived right in!"

Their first boat cost them $27,500, but they soon sold it after realising it was too small to comfortably live on.
