It is the largest terrestrial mammal in Brazil and the second in South America, weighing up to 300 kilos and 242 centimeters in length. It differs from other species in the genus Tapirus in having a prominent sagittal crest and a mane. It has a trunk, which is used to collect food. It is the last animal of the Amazon megafauna and has a frugivorous diet, playing an important role in seed dispersal, mainly of palm trees. Its predators are large felines, such as the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the puma (Puma concolor). It is a solitary animal and lives in territories of 5 square kilometers in area, on average. The tapir has a slow reproduction, with a gestation that can last more than 400 days and they only give birth to one calf at a time, which weighs between 3.2 and 5.8 kilos. They can live up to 35 years of age.
