A Tumour Has Taken Over My Face | BORN DIFFERENT

A MAN born with a severe form of neurofibromatosis type 1 has most of the tumors growing on his face - but he doesn't let the condition bring down his positivity. 35-year-old Julio, from Pará de Minas in Brazil, dreams to one day undergo plastic surgery to remove the huge tumors that cover most of his face. The tumors have grown so much that one of Julio's eyes has been severely affected, which means he has to wear a band aid over it at all times. Julio was left by his birth mother at just nine months old when doctors said he wouldn't survive. Since then, Julio has been raised by his adoptive mother Maria, and he has defied the doctors' diagnoses. Growing up was difficult for Julio, who told Truly: "When I was a child I was ashamed because everyone looked at me." He still receives negative judgement at times, but nowadays he is unaffected by it: "Sometimes I get comments of prejudice, but that doesn't worry me." Despite his condition, he is always incredibly positive and full of energy - his sister Adelia said: "For me growing up with Julio it was a learning experience, he is a person that had everything in his life to complain about - and we don't see him complaining about anything, everyday in high spirits."
