pros and cons of wordpress for business

WordPress is by far the best platform to build your online business with. No other platform comes close to WordPress's power, flexibility, customizability, and ease of use.

And to top it off, WordPress can handle any kind of online business website you have in mind...from membership websites and big e-commerce sites to smaller sites that feature your services, accept bookings, and more.

But this doesn't mean that WordPress is absolutely perfect...and I think it's important to be clear that while WordPress has a lot going for it and is used by big brands all across the world, there are a few downsides to be aware of.

Probably one of the biggest hurdles early on is getting clear on the differences between the two different flavours WordPress comes in...and they're easy to confuse -- there's WordPress..com and WordPress.org. What's the difference between the two?

Well, WordPress.com is the version of WordPress you don't want to use for your online business. This version of WordPress is free, but it functions in a similar way to services like Wix and SquareSpace...

...that is, the tool that you use to build your website and your web hosting are all bundled together...and it's very difficult (if not impossible) to separate things. Not only that, but any kind of upgrade or addition means additional cost to you.

Alternatively, WordPress.org, which is also free, allows you to host your WordPress website anywhere you want...using any web host you want. This is a much better option for your online business because it puts you in complete control of your website.

But...there's yet another layer of confusion here. Oftentimes people ask me, "So I just go to WordPress.org? Then what do I do? Do I download it?" Well, no.

See, WordPress isn't like traditional software that you install on your computer -- you know, like Microsoft Word or Dreamweaver or whatever. Instead, WordPress runs on your web hosting account. So then how do you use the WordPress.org version of WordPress?

Well, you don't go to WordPress.org to get started. Instead, you start with your web host. There, you'll likely find what's called a one-click WordPress installer that will install the latest version of WordPress onto your web server for you. I know, it's kind a complicated...

Another downside to WordPress is that while powerful, it doesn't come with a whole lot of extras, builders, or additions that you might like to have on your website. Many extras are powered by plugins...which are simply website add-ons that you can install yourself.

So by itself, WordPress is sort of a "blank canvas" that you'd then add onto as you need. Now most plugins are free while others are paid...so you might run into some costs. Another hurdle can be figuring out how to use specific plugins.

Because anyone, anywhere in the world can create and release a WordPress plugin, there's a bit of a "Wild West" vibe...and sometimes it can be hard to figure out how things work.

Now all this said, even though getting yourself started with WordPress can feel like trying to swim for the first time...the downsides are totally outweighed by all the incredible power and benefits that WordPress brings.
