should i learn web design

Huge Advantages You'll Gain By Knowing Even The Basics Of Web Design

I really believe that everyone, especially those running their own online business, should have at least a basic understanding of web design. And there are a whole bunch of benefits to learning the basics -- and I've gotta stress here...the BASICS!

We don't need to become experts or advanced designers or developers or anything like that. Instead, I'm talking about having a solid understanding of the fundamentals so that you can handle most tasks related to your website by yourself...without the need for hiring an expensive web designer or agency.

For instance, actually building and launching a website on the modern web is way, way easier than it was way back when I first got started. These days, while the sophistication has increased, the complexity has decreased -- it's kinda like your smartphone or computer...

...the power has increased while actually being able to use these things has decreased. These days, anyone can use a smartphone or computer, right? Back when I started, web design software was bloated, cumbersome, and clunky. It took a long time to do even seemingly simple tasks.

But these days we have powerful web design platforms, point-and-click interfaces, and intuitive, easy to use drag 'n drop website builders that again...pretty much anyone can use. In fact, many expensive freelance designers in fact aren't highly skilled at all...

...they simply rely on these sorts of easy to use tools and don't have any in-depth knowledge or skill. I said this earlier and I want to stress it: You don't need to become a highly advanced web expert. Instead, we want to be independent online business owners and website owners, right?

This means that while you'll handle most web-related tasks yourself...sometimes you may need to hire someone temporarily to help with more complex issues.

And because you'll have a handle on things, you'll be able to speak their language, understand what they're telling you, and even have an idea about how much things should cost and how long tasks will take to complete.

Here's another huge benefit for you: The day-to-day running of your website and online business. A lot of times, people don't think about this...but you'll likely want to make changes and updates to your website as your business grows and develops.

This could be small changes like adjusting your product pricing, adding new products, or making minor design tweaks. I've known business owners who have to rely on an outside designer for every single little change they need.

And not only does every change come with an invoice, but every request is on someone else's schedule...who may not be available right away. But many of these sorts of changes and updates are simple and easy to complete. Usually, this sorta stuff takes just a few minutes to complete.

And we haven't even talked about cost-savings yet. How much does it cost to hire someone to build your online business website for you? I have other posts that delve into the details on this question...

...but at least for now, I'll say that if you can find a cheap, low-cost designer, you might get lucky and only have to pay $2000-$3000 up front. But this cost can rapidly skyrocket. And what about actually running your website?

Again, if you aren't able to handle the simple day-to-day stuff, then this can easily cost you $100 to $200 per month or more, or an additional $2400 a year!
