Why does democracy require hordes of legislators in fancy suits? TKR Hot Take.

If we look back at the history of Western-Style Democracy we are looking at a movement started in the 18th century. This was a time before telephones, automobiles and electricity. So it makes sense to send a bunch of delegates to a big room to argue over legislation. But in our 21st century why must we continue to use a system that seems so insanely bloated and rooted in the logic of a time that is now dead? Do we really need hundreds of bureaucrats in a dark room to vote on law packages they haven't bothered reading?
