This is the moment a drink-driver recklessly overtakes a cop car on a Queensland highway before being breathalysed and found to be over the limit.

The arrest was filmed on Bargara Road near the town of Rubyanna in the Australian state of Queensland on 5th November.

The Queensland Police shared the video on social media on 8th November with the message: “Speeding, dangerous driving, allegedly 4 times over the alcohol limit with passengers. The result was a close call, a suspended licence & a date with a magistrate.

“Your choices affect you, your passengers and other road users. It's up to you.”

The video shows the man recklessly overtaking the filming officer’s car before he pulls the driver over and breathalyses him.

He then arrests the driver after the breathalyser test shows he is over the limit.

The man, 41, name not disclosed, was reportedly travelling with children in the car when he was filmed overtaking the police vehicle.

As a result, he has had his licence suspended ahead of a court hearing on 18th November.

The police said in a statement: “The 41-year-old was driving along Bargara Road with a number of passengers, including children, when he overtook an unmarked police car.

“The officer took evasive action, allowing the man to return to the correct side to the road safely and avoid a head-on collision with another car.

“The Bargara man returned a roadside breath test reading of 0.25. He was transported to a police station where he returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.195 percent.”

Police spokesperson Annette Pfingst said: “It is hard to comprehend how this man thought it was a good idea to get behind the wheel of a car in this state.

“It is also hard to believe his passengers also allowed him to.

“These decisions placed himself, his passengers and other road users at significant risk. The outcome could have been significantly worse.”

The man was charged with driving under the influence and is scheduled to appear at Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 18th November.

According to the police, 32 people have been killed on the roads in the Wide Bay region so far this year.

Across Queensland, 243 road users have been killed during 2021, representing an increase of 13 compared to the same period last year.

The Queensland Police reminded local residents: “Road safety continues to be everyone’s responsibility – it starts with you.”
