how to host videos on your website

A student of mine recently wrote in asking: "How do you manage to host so many lesson videos on your website? (in your courses, not onYouTube.) I am developing my online language learning business where I will be teaching in the videos and wondered if you could share your wisdom. Do you use some video hosting sites and embed the videos on your wordpress site?"

That's a great question. And here's my answer: Many many moons ago I struggled with exactly this issue. Because of video file sizes, hosting videos directly on your website is just too cumbersome. So some kind of "off site" solution is needed.

I researched a few options. For instance, you could host videos on YouTube and set the video to "private" and then embed the video on your web page...but then you're stuck with YouTube branding (and there may be other limitations I'm forgetting at the moment). Another option is to use a service like Vimeo Pro or Wistia...but they can get pricey.

Here's what I do for Ten Ton: All course videos are hosted on Amazon S3. I then use the Foliovision WordPress plugin, which is a video player that connects to Amazon S3 securely. There are some costs to this, but it isn't too bad: The "pro" version of Foliovision has a one-time cost of $95 and ongoing Amazon S3 expenses is literally pocket change...very often less than $10 per month.

So if you're wondering about how to host a large amount of video content on your website, this is what I'd suggest you do.
