how content marketing drives sales

Here's one way for you to think about content marketing: Businesses, both online and offline, spend truckloads of money on advertising trying to establish trust and credibility and likability. I mean, isn't that really what advertising is all about? To make potential customers aware of a business and whatever it's selling...

...and to establish the business as being credible and trustworthy? But let me ask you: Do you trust ads? Do you like being advertised to? Don'tcha LOVE it when you're watching YouTube or trying to read an article and get slammed in the face with an ad?!

Honest, genuine long-term relationships with your audience and with your potential customers can't be bought. These sorts of things can only be developed, like any other long-term relationship, over time. And this is a huge advantage that content marketing has over other forms of marketing.

If you and I are slammed in the face with an ad, or if we get approached at random out in public and we realize we're trying to be sold something, we immediately put up a barrier, don't we?

But when we're actively searching for answers to questions, if we're intentionally looking for solutions to big, complex problems everything changes doesn't it? Suddenly there's no barrier and we're very open to learning, researching, and consuming information.

This is very powerful if we use this approach to help and serve our target audience...then really, this becomes a very non-threatening way to tell this audience about ourselves, our business, and the pain-solving products and solutions we've developed just for them.

So rather than trying to buy trust through advertising (which can't be done) we can gain the trust of our market, we can build an audience around our work, we can establish credibility and likability simply by providing helpful information in the form of articles, videos, blog posts, and other types of content.
