Earl Hansen served with the 33rd Infantry Division, part of the Illinois National Guard. His unit engaged in savage mountain fighting as they advanced to the mile-high city of Baguio, the Philippine headquarters of the Japanese Army. The well-entrenched enemy had been ordered to fight to the death.
