bad web hosting
Ya know, I talk a lot about avoiding bad web hosting companies, separating your key online services, and this sorta stuff. And recently I got an email from a student of mine who told me a bit of a horror story that ties directly into all this stuff.
He'd prefer to remain anonymous, which is totally cool. Here's what he wrote to me:
Just wanted to thank you for the great service you provide, and share a bit about how it helped me in a practical way. We had been using mydomain as our hosting provider for several years. Problems multiplied over the last two years and then I got a call saying our site had been hacked and that we would have to pay $300.00 annually to have the site manually "scrubbed" and monitored. Only one person from support would talk to me (yes, I confirmed he worked there), but, for days he would never tell me what the issue was. Finally he said there were embedded links to questionable sites. I checked the html code from the published site, and in the wordpress editor, but found nothing. I had an IT friend who works for the government look it over, and he found nothing either. We were told to do a google search using site:url, and what appeared to be links did show up, but they could not be found manually, or with the Link gopher add-on in Firefox.
I was very angry and frustrated with the threatening and condescending tone of the mydomain "engineer." That is when I remembered your post about several hosting services being purchased by a large conglomerate and having their support reduced along with other things. I checked out your recommendations and went with Webhostinghub. These guys are great! I used the plugin Duplicator in Wordpress to package my website, and then uploaded the package to the new server with Filezilla. There was a setting or two on the hosting end that had to be changed, but tech support had everything finished up in no time. And, guess what? When I do the google search now, no strange links appear. Imagine that?! I am convinced that something underhanded was going on at mydomain, but that is "water under the bridge" now. I just wanted to thank you for all of your posts and great advice. I signed up for the Html, CSS, and Google analytics courses last week, and look forward to watching them in a couple of days. Afterward, I hope to set up a child theme for my site so that updating the parent theme doesn't erase my changes. Oh, and by the way, I did tell the guys at webhostinghub that we learned about them from you. After all, we need to give credit where credit is due.
Well how about that? I don't know MyDomain other than the name...I've never used them so I can't really comment on the quality of their service, but obviously it seems something fishy is going on here.
So if you're on the lookout for reputable, reliable web hosting and other services, stick with the recommendations I make. These are companies that I've used and tested myself for years and years. I'll leave some helpful links below this video.
