Stranger Things' Maya Hawke talks character's coming out.
Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has opened up about her character, Robin Buckley, coming out as a lesbian and the fans' reactions.
Hawke joined the ensemble cast of the Netflix hit in 2019 for its third season, as Steve's friend who works with him at the ice-cream store.
Steve (Joe Keery) initially had a crush on the new character, but when he confessed to Robin, she told him that she was jealous because the girl she liked kept staring at him.
Viewers, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community, praised the coming out scene, and the support that Steve ultimately gave Robin as their friendship continued.
Hawke revealed that one such viewer had reached out to her.
"Recently someone told me they watched that season with their daughter," Hawke told The Guardian.
"During that episode they both started crying, then the daughter came out to the mother.
I credit the Duffer brothers [the creators of Stranger Things ] for writing such a great character."
