get paid to learn

Any time there's a skill you want to learn, something you want to get better at, something you want to understand on a deeper level...see if you can land a job in that field...even an entry-level position will do.

I know this may be easier said than done, but hear me out. Getting paid to learn is a double-win. You gain the skills and knowledge you want...and you get paid at the same time. Tough to beat. Way, way back in the day when I was just starting out, every job I took, I took very intentionally and saw each as a stepping stone to get me closer to where I wanted to be.

Now how do you get over the issue of not having any experience? Simple. You tell the prospective employer that not having much experience makes you the perfect candidate for the job because what you lack in experience you make up for in drive and enthusiasm to learn. Plus...you'll have nothing to "unlearn" and no prior biases...which means that they can train you exactly they want things done.

Learning hands-on an din the field so so powerful that you may even have to volunteer or offer to work for free in exchange for learning the skills and knowledge you want. This is really what internships and apprenticships are all about.

In fact, very early on...while I was still in high school as a matter of fact...I had what you could call an internship at a local small business. My friends actually made fun of me while they were making minimum wage bagging groceries or whatever...but I didn't care. I was learning the business skills and gaining the knowledge that I was after...and making important contacts and developing key relationships that lead directly to me getting into teaching, writing books, building my online business, and teaching online.

Back then, I prioritized gaining important skills, knowledge, and meeting the right people over the short-term goal of making minimum wage.
