doing what you love for a living

Heyo! The whole notion of "do what you love" is poorly thought out, because it implies that we should focus on one single thing that we're truly passionate about.

How's it going my friend this is Geoff from Ten Ton Online. In fact, it's a big, fat, stinkin' myth that I'm gonna stomp all over. There's this idea that each of us were put on this earth for just one single purpose -- that there's one thing we were meant to do with our time here, and just that one thing only.

Sounds kinda boring, doesn't it?

Like, this one thing is the only thing we should spend our time on? The idea of identifying with or only being able to do one single thing seems incredibly stifling.

Here's some examples...

Did you know that actor Nick Offerman (best known for his role as Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation) is a highly skilled and accomplished woodworker? How about Bruce Dickinson? In addition to being lead singer of legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden, he's also an accomplished fencer, author, and airline pilot. Finally, did you know that Willie Nelson is a fifth degree black belt in Taekwondo?

Don't mess with Shotgun Willie -- he'll mess you up!

I'm sure these people and many, many others could have pursued very different careers and taken their lives in very different directions. And wound up just as happy.

So I don't buy into this whole "cumbia-ya...go find yourself in the wilderness...go seek out your one true purpose in life" nonsense. You know what all this really is? One giant distraction from actually getting started and getting things done. Just like everyone else on the planet, I could've followed any number of interests. In another life, I could have been a commodities and equities investor (yeah, really!), I think I would've made a hell of a good priest (although I'd get excommunicated for chasing after nuns!), and I could've followed careers in music or art.

And I'm sure this is just as true for you.

So don't buy into it. Life's a buffet of choices, experiences, and options...not a Happy Meal.
