Like all snakes in the elapidae family, the African spitting cobra has venom consisting of cardiotoxic, neurotoxic and cytotoxic substances. What makes him formidable is above all his way of defending himself. It spits its venom 2.5m away, aiming at the eyes of one it believes to be its predator and blinding it. If the latter is not careful and touches it, it bites, causing extensive hemorrhages and tissue necrosis. The victim may have breathing difficulties.
