In October, we remember the start of the Reformation. But there was also a Counter-Reformation by the Catholic Church. To stop or slow down what he perceived as a growing threat by Protestantism, Pope Sixtus V ordered the creation of a new edition of the Latin Vulgate. And for the first time, he authorized an official Roman Catholic English Bible.

The Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis and Douai Bible pages shown are from the collection of the Museum of the English Bible, Cumberland, Maryland.
