Remnant From The Ashes 3in3: Reviewing 3 hours of a game in 3 minutes

Welcome to the first in a new series, 3 in 3, where I review, discuss, and explain the first 3 hours of a game in 3 minutes. Our first game is Remnant From the Ashes, a third person action adventure game heavily inspired by Dark Souls and other games in the "Souls like" genre. I've always heard of Remnant referred to as "Dark Souls with Guns" which is a reasonable if somewhat unfair comparison. This video explores the initial 3 hours of the game in which we wash ashore in a mysterious land, engage the main enemy of the game, the Root, a demonic and hostile enemy mostly plant-like in various forms and types. We face off with bosses, collect items and equipment in the field, upgrade and improve them at base. There are classes/archetypes, abilities, perks, and mods, and various other means to customize your character in both appearance and function. We face off against several bosses on our way to the Labyrinth to meet the Keeper, who oversees the struggles of many worlds being invaded by the root. We rescue the Root Mother, fight a whole bunch of fucked up trees, and meet a wonderfully eccentric old man named Ol' Mud.

The gameplay is solid if not polished to an absolute shine. Our character feels a bit clunky at times, and movement including dodge rolls and backsteps feel a bit less fluid than Dark Souls in timing. The gunplay is solid in most cases, which is one of the most important areas given the focus on guns over melee in most of the game. All gameplay shown is from the PS4.

All in all, I had a great time in the first 3 hours of Remnant, surprisingly so. It isn't the best game to come out. It isn't even the best game in the Souls-like genre, but it's a good time and engaging in its gameplay, and has the hints of an interesting lore just starting to show itself around the 3 hour end mark. I'll be diving in further so expect a full review soon.
