In her last agony, St. Therese of Lisieux had several pictures of her favorite saints put by her bedside. By her was a lovely picture of the Virgin Mary, a small image of St. Joseph, and an image of the great St. Joan of Arc. But also nearby her, and far larger than any of the other images, was a picture of the little-known French Missionary, St. Theophane Venard. St. Therese begger her Sisters to study the life of St. Theophane, and to promote his virtues. St. Theophane was a missionary filled with zeal for God, charity for his neighbor, great confidence, love for his family, and constant cheerfulness. He would become a priest and a foreign missionary. Despite ill health, he would go to Tong-King, the northern region of Vietnam, to spread the Gospel. After years of labor for Christ, he would die a heroic death at the hands of the Annamites. His story is one of charity, heroism, and joy in God--even in the darkest hours.
