A fire broke out on a massive container ship off the coast of Canada on October 23, 2021, spewing toxic gas into the air. A total of 16 crew members were evacuated, but no injuries were reported. Five crew remained on the vessel to fight the fire, which has since been ‘stabilised’ after tug boats were sent out to spray and cool down the hull overnight. The MV Zim Kingston, carrying more than 52 tonnes (57 tons) of mining chemicals, was en route to Vancouver when the fire broke out amid extreme weather. Officials said the toxic gas from the fire posed no danger to people on shore.
