Cytokines Series: Interleukin 2 - The ‘long life’ cytokine #shorts

This is the fifth of a series of short videos on Low dose Medicine and in particular Cytokines. This video introduces the cytokine Interleukin 2.
IL 2 stimulates T and B lymphocytes and NK cells; it regulates the adaptive immune system and stimulates cell-mediated immune responses.
IL 2 is a ‘master’ cytokine for the discrimination between self and non-self which is a hallmark of healthy immune system. In fact, IL-2 is necessary during T cell development in the thymus for the maturation of regulatory T cells.
IL 2 is also pivotal for the growth, proliferation, and differentiation of T cells to become 'effector' T cells.
IL 2 is able to facilitate antibody production and response, especially immunoglobulins produced by B cells.
The production of IL 2 decreases with age (along with the hormone Melatonin and the growth factor IGF-1) which is one of the reasons why elderly people are more susceptible to infections and cancer.
