Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1974 track "Sweet Home Alabama" was initially featured on the group's second album, Second Helping, as the first single.

Neil Young's 1970 song "Southern Man," which criticized the whole South for its violent history of slavery and its consequences, inspired the song's lyrical content. Lyrics to "Sweet Home Alabama" mention Young by name.

It peaked at number 8 on the US singles chart in 1974, becoming the group's second top 10 success.
