Nigeria: Demonstrators mark anniversary of Lekki toll gate shooting and End SARS demos - 20.10.2021

In der nigerianischen Hauptstadt Abuja marschierten am Mittwoch Demonstranten anlässlich des Jahrestages der End-SARS-Proteste gegen die Polizeibrutalität, die zu Zusammenstößen und der tödlichen Schießerei an der Lekki-Mautstelle in Lagos geführt hatte.

Die Demonstranten marschierten und skandierten Slogans gegen die Polizei und die Regierung. In der Nähe fand auch eine Gegendemonstration statt.

Die Massenproteste und die eskalierenden Spannungen im Oktober letzten Jahres wurden von der Polizei und dem Militär niedergeschlagen. Dabei kam es am 20. Oktober zu einer Schießerei an der Mautstelle von Lekki in Lagos, bei der eine umstrittene Anzahl von Zivilisten getötet wurde. Dutzende von Demonstranten sowie mehrere Polizisten und Soldaten wurden im Verlauf der Proteste getötet.

Demonstrators marched in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, on Wednesday, marking the anniversary of the End SARS protests against police brutality leading to clashes including the deadly Lekki toll gate shooting in Lagos.

Protesters were seen marching and chanting slogans against police and the government. A counter-protest was also held nearby.

Mass protests and escalating tensions in October of last year were met with a police and military crackdown including a shooting at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos, on October 20, where a disputed number of civilians were killed. Dozens of protesters, as well as several policemen and soldiers were killed over the course of the protests.

Los manifestantes marcharon el miércoles en Abuja, la capital nigeriana, para conmemorar el aniversario de las protestas de End SARS contra la brutalidad policial, que desembocaron en enfrentamientos como el mortal tiroteo del peaje de Lekki, en Lagos.
